Real leadership is what our country, state, and local communities desperately need. I believe the reason is because people don’t know what real leadership is. Most people think leadership is all about a position, but it’s much more than that. It’s about influence. Humility is fundamental to real leadership. It’s about being teachable, and realizing we know we may be wrong at times. Humility asks, “How can I help?” Leadership says, “Come and join me,” not “Go do this, or that”. Real leaders say, “Come be a part of the team!” As leaders, we must realize that all of us are smarter than one of us alone. Leadership leads, and realizes that people intuitively knows if you think you are better than they are. No one wants to follow that. If you have to keep reminding people who you are, then you are at the lowest level of leadership: Positional Leadership, which says, “I’m the boss, do what I say, or else!” Leaders also say “we” not “I”. It’s not about you, it’s about the team. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
